Barnet youngster George Sykes was honoured at the Football League Awards at the weekend.

The striker, who has excelled on the pitch as well as off it with his education going very well, was named the LFE Apprentice of the Year for 2013 in League Two and received his award at the gala ceremony on Sunday just gone.

Sykes, as he told the official website, said: ‘I am really surprised, I didn’t expect when I started my scholarship that I would be getting something like this. It just shows if you work as hard as you can, you give yourself a chance.

‘I would like one day to play at the highest level possible but I am not getting ahead of myself.’

The goals have flowed at youth and U21 development level for the Scot, who has also been called up by Scotland at U19 level making his first-team debut for The Bees last August having not too long before that signed his first professional contract.
