Barnet have suffered a big blow at the start of the season with the loss of Ismail Yakubu.

Yakubu led the Bees out for the first time in the 0-0 draw at Morecambe on Saturday but today was injured in training. He injured his groin and it is believed he will be out for at least four weeks.

It leaves the defence is trouble just three days into the season with the only other regonised central defender being James Cole who has yet to make his debut since signing his first professional contract, leaving the Protec academy this summer.

Paul Fairclough had been planning to sign a centre-half as cover before the transfer window but now he may need to step-up his efforts to find one with Barnet’s thin squad already being tested at this early stage.

The captain will miss a host of league games – Hereford, Brentford, Bradford, Dagenham & Redbridge and Rochdale – along with tomorow’s Carling Cup tie at Norwich City.

Assistant in central defence, Sagi Burton will now be taking over the armband until Yakubu recovers from this new injury whilst Cole will get his chance to shine. Supporters will now be hoping Cole can step up to the plate like Joe Devera did last season and grab his chance with both hands to impress Fairclough and earn a regular start in defence.

Another possibility is Devera moving to centre-back with Ian Hendon getting back in the team at right-back but it seems certain for Cole to be given his opportunity in at least Saturday’s first home game against Hereford United for him to show what he’s got before Fairclough decides to draft in Hendo’ for the starting line.
