Barnet’s survival hope got a massive boost at the weekend with a last minute win over Port Vale.

Lawrie Sanchez knows that there is still ‘a lot of work to do’ but knows the win gives The Bees a bit of breathing room and was left in little doubt it was a win that was deserved for Barnet: ‘we deserved it. We had the better chances and I thought we were in charge of the game when we went behind.

‘It was a great moment for Andy, but I thought Ben May had as good a debut as you could wish to see.

‘When we conceded the goal I feared it would deflate the boys, but they deserve great credit for the character and effort they showed to come back and win. It’s a terrific three points which gives us a bit of security above the bottom clubs, but there is still a lot of work to do.’

Ben May wasn’t signed much before the game and he marked this with a goal. The loanee, the ‘big centre forward’ that Sanchez has been looking for for a while, has been praised for his part played: ‘we’ve been looking for a big centre-forward for a long time. They are difficult to find because they are a dying breed, but Ben fitted the bill and he was great.

‘I’ve got to thank our chairman for working all night to get the deal done and I’m sure it was a surprise for Port Vale to see his name on our teamsheet.’

This win moves Barnet five points clear of the relegation zone.
