Simon King is on the verge of signing for League One side Gillignham.

Transfer-listed and Player of the Year King, who is Barnet’s best player, is set to make the step up to League One, after the club announced they were negotiating a fee for the defender.

King rejected a contract offer last month after telling the club he wanted to progress his footballing career, and everyone knows he has the ability to do that. With one year left on his Bees’ contract, he could still be at Underhill next year, but after interest from higher clubs was revealed, it is unlikely we’ll be seeing our main man back in the black and amber shirt.

Supporters are concerned with this news due to a number of factors. Most fans believe he has enough ability to make the step up to Championship level, which I personally totally agree with. For a player of his nature, and after Tresor Kandol was sold for £200,000 I expect King should be sold for know less that a six-figure sum. Indeed the minimum of that would still be indecent for his attributes that he shines with every week on the pitch, but I’m concerned that a mid-tabled League One club would not be able to afford the sort of money to pay big bucks for a player. And if they did, they would spread it around, not use it all on just one player, even if it is King! And the Gills’ fans would not be overly impressed seeing as most people outside Underhill don’t know much about the quality in the King, though scouts would have surely spotted his talent.

It’s in my view that at League Two level you’re never going to get huge amounts of money for players, no matter how good they are, just because they are untested at a higher level. In the near past, this is shown through Kandol who left the Bees for perhaps an overpriced £200k, and since his move he’s performed disappointingly – just one goal to his name in more than half a year.

What’s your view on King’s situation? Should he leave for Gillingham, stay with the Bees, or hold out for a bigger club? Let us hear your views in the comment section below and discuss it with fellow Bees’ followers on the message board!
