Following Simon King’s departure to Gillingham, Chairman Paul Scally revealed it was former Bees’ midfielder Andy Hessenthaler who recommended King to his former club.

All the formalities of King’s transfer is set to be finalised tomorrow, in which King will sign a deal keeping him at Priestfield until 2010, and the Gills’ Chief said the club had been long tracking King’s career.

‘We had been watching him all season and had him checked out thoroughly,’ Scally told BBC Radio Kent. ‘We talked to an awful lot of people about him.

‘Andy Hessenthaler recommended him highly. In his time at Barnet he said he was best player they had.

‘Hessy thinks he is going all the way to the top,’ which shows that it is not only the Barnet fans who hold him in the highest regard.
