Paul Fairclough has made his third signing of the summer in the form of James Cole.

The central defender has signed his first professional contract, which will keep Cole at the club for two years, after graduating from the Protec Academy based in Hertfordshire. It has proved highly successful with the findings of first-teamer Ismail Yakubu and Joe Devera, and Cole will hope to follow in their footsteps and that was also the view of the boss: ‘We’d like James (Cole) to follow in the footsteps of Joe (Devera). He is of the same calibre and the hope is that he will develop the same way as Joe.’

The teenager has made appearances in the Herts Senior Cup this season and admitted he was delighted to be signing for the Bees, saying ‘I jumped at the chance to come in and sign.’

Fans will undoubtedly hoping all of Fairclough’s signings will have enough desire to take Barnet forward and challenge for promotion, because all three have little or no league experience and are young. So there is already some concern regarding whether any experience will be present in the squad of the 2007/08 squad that will be aiming to get a top-seven finish.

And we’ve already seen how important experience can be when there’s a need for a particular league aim – shown in last season’s relegation battle with Andy Hessenthaler and Paul Warhurst.

But another signing it secure and Fairclough will look to secure a few more before pre-season…
