Barnet were comprehensively thumped away at Norwich in the first round of the Carling Cup and to make matters worse, Neal Bishop was shown a straight red late on to add to Paul Fairclough‘s squad crisis.

All of the goals Barnet conceded came within half-hour of the start of the match, Ian Hendon taking his spot at right-back with Joe Devera moving centrally to cover long-term injury victim Ismail Yakubu.

Ironically, Barnet were the better team in the opening stages, looking lively on the ball and ready to create chances but two speedy counter-attacks by their hosts brought them back down to earth. Bishop’s long-range shot was destined for the bottom corner only for Marshall to push it around the post, but in the next minute Jon Otsemobor crossed homecoming striker Jamie Cureton to volley well from 12 yards out.

Lee Croft shortly crossed into the box, deflectin off skipper Sagi Burton into Cureton’s feet who made no mistake from short-range in smashing past Lee Harrison.

From then on it was wave after wave of City attacks and with every chance they had they put another past Harrison in a miserable night for the Bees. Simon Lappin received the ball on the left, the Barnet defence backed off and he hit a stunning 25-yarder into the top corner.

Norwich City 3 – 0 Barnet

Jason Shackell’s header was cleared off the line minutes later by Harrison with the ball kindly falling to Mark Fotheringham who hit his shot low into the net for four.

And 1/3 through the game it was five for the rampant hosts, Harrison saving from Cureton only for Russell to easily tap in the rebound.

Norwich City 5 – 0 Barnet

There was some rest for the players when the assistant referee got injured, later replaced by the fourth official. Barnet should’ve grabbed a goal soon after the situation was sorted out, Jason Puncheon crossing for Anthony Thomas whose header smashed against the crossbar as he continued his search for his first goal in League Football.

Brown received yellow when his elbow sent Burton to the ground, and had to receive stiches above and below his eye in what was an nasty-looking injury.

Fairclough once against gave an inspired team-talk like he has done in the past but cleary a 5-0 defecit was too much to get back against a Championship outfit, but a couple of goals did restore Barnet’s pride. The Bees were working hard to get a goal back and Ashley Carew really should’ve got that but he fired wide from Puncheon’s cross. Finally Barnet’s conselation goal came on 65 minutes, Joe Devera crossing into the area which bounced off a home defender, as the ball came back to earth Puncheon hit a sweet volley low into the net which gave Marshall no chance.

Norwich City 5 – 1 Barnet

Harrison still had work to do, tipping around a Shacknell header but Barnet deservedly knicked another goal, Thomas passing to Adam Birchall whose great finish from 15 yards beat Marshall all ends up.

Norwich City 5 – 2 Barnet

But as the Bees seemed on the ascendancy, the game ended on bad terms, Bishop being shown a straight red and resultantly a three-match ban after he elbowed Fotheringham in a challenge and now faces three matches on the sidelines to further strech Barnet’s desperately small squad.
