Following his summer trial the Official Website has confirmed the arrival of Jamie Stephens on a permanent basis.

Stephens, who started his career with Liverpool and also had a spell with Newport, comes to the Hive to act as back up for Bees no.1 and player-coach Graham Stack having agreed a one-year deal on Thursday.

Upon his signing, an ‘ecstatic’ Stephen said.

‘I’m ecstatic and I’m really looking forward to the season ahead – it’s a great opportunity for me to come here.

‘I’ve been training here for just over a week and I’ve played in a game as well.

‘All the lads have taken to me and I’ve been getting on well with them, so I’m enjoying it.’

The 21-year-old hasn’t had much first-team experience, he didn’t feature at Anfield and made a little over a dozen appearances in his two-years at Rodney Parade with him also having loan spells with Welsh side Airbus UK Broughton and Gloucester City.

In total Stephens has probably played less than 30 first-team games, more than some will in a career mind! Being able to learn from Stack is also something he’s looking forward to doing as he’ll learn from someone who has topflight experience and knows the game inside out.

Stephens isn’t coming in to merely ‘make up the numbers’ though, he added he’s looking to challenge Stack for his first-team place.

‘Football’s a team game and I need to support Graham Stack because he’s an outstanding goalkeeper – he’s done brilliantly for the club.

‘But I’m looking forward to getting games myself and pushing Graham so that we can get the best out of each other.’

He’ll have to go some to dislodge Stack but competition is healthy and if/when his chance comes along it’ll be up to Stephens to make sure he takes it and gives Bees boss Martin Allen something to think about!
